Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has ordered a significant expansion of Flame Tree planting throughout the city, covering streets, homes, recreational spaces, and public parks.
The directive came during a meeting with Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation, where Sheikh Hamdan described the tree’s seasonal bloom as a defining feature of the city’s character.
“In summer, when the Flame Tree blooms in Dubai, it brings life to every home, every majlis, every street, and every park,”
he said.
As part of the initiative, seedlings will be distributed to residents who wish to plant the trees at their homes or farms, extending the green drive beyond public spaces into private ones.
The Flame Tree, recognised for its wide canopy, lush foliage, and vivid orange-red blossoms, typically blooms in May and colours Dubai’s landscape through to late July. Beyond its visual appeal, the tree offers practical environmental benefits — its canopy can span up to 15 metres and reduces ground temperature beneath it by around five degrees Celsius.
Well-suited to Dubai’s hot and humid climate, the tree thrives in both sandy and clay soils with good drainage. It grows rapidly in its early years, naturally forming an elegant canopy with minimal maintenance. With a lifespan of up to 60 years and a mature height of up to 12 metres, it represents a long-term investment in the city’s urban greenery.
The expansion aligns with Dubai’s broader sustainability goals and ongoing efforts to enhance livability through nature-based urban planning.
