Health experts in the UAE have moved to calm public fears surrounding hantavirus, stressing that the illness is very different from Covid-19 and carries a far lower risk of widespread transmission.

Doctors explained that hantavirus infections are rare and are mainly linked to exposure to rodents and contaminated environments, not everyday human interaction. The reassurance follows growing online discussions and concerns about the virus.

Authorities including the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Health and Prevention said the UAE remains fully prepared to respond to potential health threats while closely monitoring developments.

Virus linked to rodents, not casual contact

According to Dr. Srinivasa Rao Polumuru of NMC Specialty Hospital, hantavirus is primarily spread through contact with infected rodent urine, saliva, or droppings, especially in dusty and poorly ventilated environments.

People can become infected by inhaling contaminated particles or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching their face.

Medical experts emphasized that hantavirus does not spread easily between people like Covid-19. Dr. Muhammed Aslam of International Modern Hospital said human-to-human transmission is extremely rare and has only been documented in limited strains found in parts of South America.

Low public risk in the UAE

Doctors noted that the overall risk to residents in the UAE remains low. Most infections globally have been associated with environments such as abandoned buildings, farms, warehouses, storage facilities, and areas with rodent infestations.

Healthcare professionals added that ordinary public spaces including offices, schools, malls, and public transport are not considered high-risk locations for transmission.

However, individuals involved in construction work, cleaning neglected spaces, or visiting rural environments abroad were advised to exercise caution.

Symptoms to watch for

Early signs of hantavirus can resemble common viral infections and may include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal discomfort

In more severe cases, patients may develop coughing and breathing difficulties.

Doctors advised residents to seek medical attention if symptoms appear after travel to high-risk areas or after exposure to rodent-prone environments.

Precautions recommended by doctors

Medical experts encouraged residents to remain aware without panicking. Recommended safety measures include:

  • Ventilating closed rooms before cleaning
  • Avoiding sweeping dry dust
  • Wearing gloves and masks when cleaning risky areas
  • Disinfecting surfaces before wiping
  • Maintaining proper hygiene and pest control

Doctors stressed that simple preventive measures are effective and that hantavirus should not be viewed as another global pandemic threat.
