The United States introduced an expedited visa process for fans holding tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, AFP reported. The initiative, called the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (FIFA PASS), gives ticket holders access to prioritised US visa interview appointments, easing travel ahead of the tournament.
For UAE-based travellers, especially expatriates who require a US visitor visa and are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Programme, the announcement raises an important question: what does the current visa appointment situation look like?
Despite the new initiative, waiting times for standard US visa appointments in the UAE remain lengthy. According to Hadi Umer, visa consultant at The Visa Guy.
“Dubai’s waiting time runs until late 2026, and Abu Dhabi’s until early 2027. Under the updated policy, applicants from the UAE can only book their appointments within the UAE or in their home country, as nearby countries now require applicants to hold residency there to schedule an appointment for a US visa.”
Umer notes that even with priority access, applicants must be fully prepared before attempting to secure an appointment. “If you do secure an early appointment with your FIFA ticket, applicants must have the completed DS-160, the visa fee paid, and correct passport details and DS-160 confirmation number before booking.”

Anastasia Yanchenko, CEO of The Visa Services, says demand from UAE travellers has been rising steadily. “Interest started months ago and continues to grow, as travellers understand that securing a US visa well in advance is essential for attending the tournament in June.”
She adds that the new prioritised system may ease timelines slightly. “With this newly announced initiative, there is hope that obtaining visa appointments may become easier for fans heading to the event.”
Common reasons UAE residents face US visa rejections
Yachenko says her team frequently observes the same issues across tourist, business and student visa applications. The most common reason for refusal is a weak demonstration of strong ties to the UAE.
“Inadequate proof of employment, ownership, or commitments that indicate the applicant will leave the US at the end of the trip is a major factor,” she explains.
Misunderstanding eligibility requirements is another frequent concern. “Many applicants believe that hotel bookings, tickets or even a student I-20 automatically guarantee approval, which is incorrect. Applicants also sometimes include irrelevant or distant family links in the US, which can confuse their stated purpose and intent to return.”
She advises applicants to clearly define their trip purpose, provide credible evidence of ties to the UAE, and submit honest and relevant information to maximise approval chances.
The major one among them is a weak demonstration of strong ties to the UAE. For instance inadequate proof of employment, ownership, or commitments that indicate the applicant will leave the US at the end of the trip.
It remains unclear whether FIFA PASS will apply to nationals of countries subject to US travel bans. In June, President Trump signed an executive order barring nationals from 12 countries from entering the US, citing security concerns.
Who needs a visa to enter the United States for the World Cup?
Travellers attending the tournament must ensure they hold the correct documentation.
Passport validity:
All visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their stay, unless they are citizens of exempt countries. Canadian and Bermudan passport holders do not require additional authorisation for tourist travel.
Visa Waiver Programme (VWP):
Citizens of 42 countries, including most of Europe, the UK, Japan and Australia can apply through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
B-1/B-2 visitor visas:
Travellers from all other countries must obtain a valid US visitor visa. Under Section 214(b) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, all B-1/B-2 applicants are presumed to be intending immigrants unless they can demonstrate:
- The purpose of the visit is temporary.
- They plan to stay for a limited period.
- They have funds to cover the trip.
- They hold strong ties outside the US ensuring their return.
Required documents include:
- Proof of income, assets, property or business ownership.
- Travel itinerary or explanation of travel purpose.
- A letter from the employer detailing position, salary and approved leave.
- Any applicable criminal or court records.
Unlike the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cups, where match tickets generated a Fan ID that functioned similarly to a visa.
