The 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway in spectacular fashion on Thursday, delivering goals, controversy, and plenty of talking points across Mexico.

With five goals scored, three red cards issued, and FIFA’s new mandatory hydration breaks making their debut, the tournament’s opening day provided fans with an unforgettable start to football’s biggest showpiece.

Red Cards Dominate Opening Day

Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca was overshadowed by an extraordinary number of dismissals. South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, along with Mexico defender Cesar Montes, all received red cards in a fiery encounter.

The three red cards issued in a single match nearly equalled the total number shown throughout the entire 2018 and 2022 World Cups combined. The incident has raised questions about whether referees are setting a stricter standard that could lead to more dismissals throughout the tournament.

VAR Sparks Fresh Controversy

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) once again became a major talking point after South Africa’s Themba Zwane was sent off following a review.

Referee Wilton Sampaio initially allowed play to continue but changed his decision after consulting the pitch-side monitor. Zwane was dismissed for violent conduct after his arm struck Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado during an off-the-ball incident.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos strongly disagreed with the decision, arguing that the punishment was too severe and that his player had been blocked by the Mexican opponent.

The incident reignited debate over VAR’s role in football and whether technology is helping or hindering the flow of the game.

Hydration Breaks Receive Mixed Reactions

For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA introduced compulsory hydration breaks in every half regardless of weather conditions.

While the move was designed to prioritise player welfare, it drew criticism from fans and coaches. Some broadcasters used the breaks for commercial advertisements, causing frustration among viewers who missed portions of live action.

United States coach Mauricio Pochettino questioned the necessity of mandatory breaks in moderate weather conditions, although he acknowledged they provide coaches with valuable opportunities to make tactical adjustments.

South Korea Rally Despite Son’s Missed Chances

South Korea secured one of the day’s most exciting victories, coming from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1.

Captain Son Heung-min created numerous opportunities but was unable to find the net despite several clear chances. Instead, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Hwang In-beom emerged as the heroes, scoring the goals that completed a dramatic Korean comeback.

The result highlighted South Korea’s resilience and ensured a positive start to their World Cup campaign.

Clash of Footballing Philosophies

The match between South Korea and Czechia showcased two contrasting styles of football.

Despite both teams lining up in a 3-4-3 formation, South Korea relied on possession, quick passing, and movement, while Czechia focused on physical play and set-piece opportunities.

Although the Czechs struck first, South Korea’s technical superiority and control of possession eventually proved decisive as they overturned the deficit to claim all three points.

A Tournament Off to a Memorable Start

From controversial refereeing decisions and heated debates over VAR to tactical battles and dramatic comebacks, the opening day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered excitement on every front.

If the first day is any indication, football fans around the world can expect plenty more drama, controversy, and unforgettable moments during the next 39 days of competition across North America.
