Cabin crew call for medical professional onboard, and Al Harithi quickly steps forward

Dubai: A Saudi Airlines flight from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh to Bisha became a scene of humanitarian heroism when a passenger suffered a severe medical emergency mid-flight, losing consciousness shortly after takeoff.

The cabin crew urgently called for a medical professional onboard, and Majid Al Harithi, a nurse travelling on the flight, quickly stepped forward.

After verifying his credentials, Al Harithi assessed the elderly passenger’s condition. Despite the absence of advanced medical equipment, he identified a slow pulse and promptly administered oxygen, positioning the passenger for optimal comfort.

“I heard the call for medical assistance about 30 minutes after takeoff,” Al Harithi said. “I knew checking the heart rate and pulse was critical, and although we lacked the necessary tools, we stabilized his condition with oxygen.”

The aircraft’s captain closely monitored the situation, prepared to make an emergency landing if necessary. Thanks to Al Harithi’s swift intervention and ongoing observation, the crisis was averted, and the flight continued as planned. Coordination with medical staff at Bisha Airport ensured the passenger received care upon arrival.

Al Harithi, who works in the emergency department of the Mental Health Hospital in Bisha, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to assist. “I thank God for guiding me to help. I also appreciate the recognition from the captain and passengers,” he said, emphasizing the need for basic medical equipment, such as blood pressure monitors and oxygen level detectors, on flights to improve emergency care.
