20-year-old woman’s family alleges sustained physical and mental harassment by her husband
DUBAI/KANNUR: Kerala Police have issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) for a 27-year-old Indian expatriate based in Dubai following the death of his 20-year-old wife in Kannur district, authorities have confirmed.
The man, identified by his initials A.P.C., is accused of abetting his wife’s suicide after her family alleged that she had been subjected to prolonged physical and mental harassment.
His wife, Fathimath Risa, died on July 28 after reportedly hanging herself at her family home in Kannur.
Police registered a case of abetment of suicide following a complaint from Risa’s family. The husband has also been booked under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a married woman.
According to the family, they discovered the extent of Risa’s alleged suffering only after finding a four-page suicide note and messages she had sent to friends.
Allegations in suicide note
Risa’s uncle said the young woman had described alleged harassment by her husband in the suicide note. He claimed that the situation became worse after she spent about two months with her husband in Dubai earlier this year.
The couple reportedly married in January, and Risa travelled to Dubai in April.
According to her uncle, Risa also alleged that she had seen her husband using drugs with friends in Dubai. When she questioned him, he allegedly threatened to make accusations against her and inform her parents.
The family said Risa remained silent because she was concerned about her father’s health.
Her relatives said they had been unaware of the alleged problems in the marriage until after her death.
Husband returned to Dubai
Following Risa’s death, both her brother and husband travelled to Kerala from Dubai.
Family members said A.P.C. did not initially go directly to Risa’s family home and arrived later for the burial.
A neighbour claimed that local residents prevented him from attending the funeral after the suicide note and messages came to light.
Residents have also reportedly lodged a complaint against the husband and his family, calling for a comprehensive investigation.
Risa’s family has further alleged that her in-laws pressured her to conceal her suffering and a previous suicide attempt.
Police examine digital evidence
Investigators are examining Risa’s suicide note, WhatsApp conversations and other material recovered from her phone.
The investigation is being led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kannur City, Azad MP, and his team.
Police confirmed that the Look Out Circular was issued after they established that A.P.C. had travelled back to Dubai shortly after the burial.
An LOC allows Indian authorities to alert immigration and law-enforcement agencies about a person wanted in connection with a criminal investigation. Any further action involving international cooperation will depend on the outcome of the investigation and applicable legal procedures.
Man reportedly uncontactable
A.P.C. could not be reached for comment, with his mobile phone reportedly switched off or unreachable.
One of his colleagues said he had allegedly suffered injuries after being confronted by local residents following Risa’s death. The colleague said A.P.C. returned to Dubai but did not report for work and has since been difficult to contact.
The allegations against A.P.C. and his family have not been proven in court. The investigation remains ongoing.
