DUBAI – A Dubai-based salesman was allegedly robbed of Dh1.7 million by two suspects posing as police officers, while three additional individuals were later arrested for their involvement in the crime.

According to authorities, the incident took place in the Al Muraqqabat area near a commercial centre in Al Muteena. The victim, an Egyptian national working for a wholesale electronics company, had reportedly collected large cash payments from clients after mobile phone sales.

Investigators said the salesman had just left an office on the third floor of a building carrying around Dh1.7 million in cash when he entered an elevator with two men. One suspect reportedly joined him inside the lift while another was already there.

The pair allegedly identified themselves as officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and asked to inspect his identification documents. Moments later, they assaulted the victim and snatched the bag containing the money before fleeing from the building lobby.

Authorities believe the robbery was carefully planned, noting that preliminary investigations suggest the suspects had prior knowledge of the salesman’s movements and had been monitoring him before carrying out the attack.

Dubai Police immediately formed a specialised task force that reviewed surveillance footage, conducted field investigations, and analysed evidence to track down those involved.

Police later located a vehicle believed to have been used during the robbery in another emirate. Several suspects were subsequently arrested.

During the operation, authorities recovered approximately Dh728,000, which suspects allegedly admitted was part of the stolen cash. Investigations found that the remaining money had reportedly been used to settle personal debts and financial obligations.

Dubai Police and the Public Prosecution stressed that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant against impersonation crimes and warned residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be police officers. Officials also noted that genuine officers do not carry out such identification checks in this manner in public places.

Residents have been urged to report suspicious activity through official channels as investigations continue.
