Al Jazeera’s correspondent on the ground reports that Israeli air attacks have pounded central areas in the Gaza Strip and eastern parts of Khan Younis in the south in what appears to be a concentration of attacks.
After a day in which dozens were killed in Gaza, a further three people are dead and more than 10 wounded in overnight Israeli attacks that destroyed two homes and tents sheltering displaced people in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
Hamas has named its leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, as the movement’s new political chief to replace Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated in Tehran in an attack widely attributed to Israel.
Israel’s military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in an interview that Israel remains committed to killing Sinwar following news of his election as the new leader of Hamas’s political bureau.
At least 39,653 people have been killed and 91,535 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 and more than 200 were taken captive.
