NEW YORK — US President Donald Trump has confirmed that American officials held a three-hour meeting with Iranian representatives at the United Nations in New York, describing the talks as “very good”.
Trump told reporters at the UN General Assembly that the meeting involved senior US and Iranian officials and said another meeting was expected to take place “in the very near future”.
Iranian state media also confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in New York, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
The talks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani warning the UN General Assembly that the region is going through one of its most dangerous periods.
Sheikh Tamim called for diplomacy and dialogue, saying a lasting solution to the crisis must be pursued through diplomatic efforts.
The latest US-Iranian engagement at the UN comes as international attention remains focused on efforts to prevent further escalation and find a diplomatic path forward.
Further talks between Washington and Tehran are expected in the coming days.
