CAIRO- The Arab League has welcomed the United States’ decision to permanently remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, describing the move as an important step towards the country’s recovery and the end of decades of suffering.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy congratulated the Syrian government and people on the decision, saying it could help create conditions for greater international support for Syria’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Fahmy called on the international community to build on the development by supporting the Syrian government’s efforts to restore security, stability and prosperity, while addressing the country’s long-standing humanitarian and development challenges.
He also reaffirmed the Arab League’s readiness to support Syria during its current transition, particularly through political and development initiatives aimed at strengthening the Syrian state and supporting reconstruction.
The Arab League said it remains committed to playing an active role in helping Syria advance towards greater stability and meet the aspirations of its people.
