JOHANNESBURG – South Africa has described the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a crucial strategic partner for Africa, highlighting its growing role in driving trade, investment, and economic cooperation across the continent.

Speaking during the Dubai-South Africa Business Forum in Johannesburg, Lester Bouah, Chief Director for Investment Mobilisation at South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, praised the trade mission organised by Dubai Chambers, saying it reflects the strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Bouah noted that the UAE has become one of South Africa’s most important economic and investment partners, with bilateral relations continuing to expand through increased government and business engagement.

He said South Africa views the UAE as a vital gateway connecting African markets to the global economy, while also serving as a key partner in promoting trade and investment opportunities across the continent.

According to Bouah, economic cooperation between the two countries has gained momentum in recent years through high-level visits and growing collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders.

Trade figures underscore this positive trajectory. South African exports to the UAE have reached approximately US$2.68 billion, reflecting stronger market access and increasing commercial exchange between the two countries.

The UAE has also established itself as a major investor in South Africa. Emirati investors have launched 33 projects valued at nearly US$22.96 billion, generating more than 5,500 jobs and demonstrating strong confidence in South Africa’s economic potential.

Bouah said South Africa is eager to attract additional investment from the UAE, particularly in sectors that support economic growth and employment creation. These include advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure development, logistics, and emerging technologies.

He added that the relationship between South Africa and the UAE extends beyond trade and investment, resting on a foundation of mutual trust, shared interests, and long-term strategic cooperation.

Looking ahead, Bouah expressed optimism that the partnership will continue to expand into new sectors, creating greater opportunities for economic development and prosperity in both countries.
