DUBAI-Iran has proposed a seven-day roadmap to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, saying the waterway could return to normal maritime traffic if the United States accepts Tehran’s conditions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal had been delivered to Washington through intermediaries during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Araghchi said the seven-day timeline would begin immediately after the United States accepts the proposal, with the strait expected to reopen at the end of the period. (Reuters)
“The choice now rests with the United States,” Araghchi said, according to Reuters.
The Iranian proposal is based largely on a memorandum of understanding reached between Tehran and Washington in June. It calls for an end to hostilities and measures that would allow shipping through the strategic waterway to resume. (Al Jazeera)
The Strait of Hormuz is a major route for global oil and gas shipments, making its disruption a significant concern for international energy markets.
Reports indicate that Iran’s wider proposal includes an end to fighting across several regional fronts, the lifting of the US naval blockade and sanctions affecting Iranian oil exports, as well as the release of frozen Iranian assets. (Al Jazeera)
US officials have said diplomatic channels remain open, although Washington has indicated that it is not prepared to rush into an agreement.
The latest proposal comes as diplomatic efforts intensify on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with Qatar and other countries involved in efforts to facilitate communication between Tehran and Washington.
For now, the proposed seven-day timetable remains conditional on US acceptance of the Iranian plan.
