Dubai’s DXB Airport to Close by 2033: Experts Unveil Ambitious Vision for the Future
Dubai has officially confirmed the future closure of Dubai International Airport (DXB), with plans to redevelop the sprawling site gaining momentum following discussions at the Arabian Travel Market.

The announcement comes as the first phase of the new Al Maktoum International Airport is scheduled for completion by 2032, paving the way for DXB’s transformation. Speaking at the event, DXB CEO Paul Griffiths said the redevelopment of the area is now a key focus, with strong interest from real estate developers.

“Redeveloping the area could help spread the city and ease traffic congestion,”
he noted.

Spanning more than 29 square kilometers, the DXB site is seen as a rare opportunity for large-scale urban regeneration. Experts envision a low-carbon, mixed-use district that prioritizes sustainability, equitable access, and quality of life. Dr Rana Shakaa from the American University of Sharjah emphasized the need for a data-driven approach, aligning the project with Dubai’s urban evolution and demographic trends.

Phillip Dunn of Expo City Dubai highlighted the potential to create a model for desert cities worldwide, proposing a nature-integrated district that supports climate adaptation, biodiversity, and public wellbeing. He suggested incorporating rewilded zones, walkable spaces, and a “Living Lab” for citizen-led innovation.

Preserving the airport’s historical identity will also be a part of the transformation. Dr Rana stressed the importance of retaining architectural elements and the site’s legacy as one of the world’s longest-operating airports.

Real estate experts call the shift a major win.

“It’s a catalyst for growth,”
said Tatiana Tonu, CEO of Object 1, pointing to Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport redevelopment as a successful example of urban renewal.

With infrastructure in place and the city’s growth trajectory in mind, DXB’s next chapter is poised to reshape Dubai’s urban future.
