With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to kick off across the United States, Mexico and Canada on June 11, participating nations have now confirmed their official base camps — the training and accommodation hubs they will use during the group stage.

From Argentina in Kansas City to Portugal in Florida and England sharing Missouri with fellow giants, teams are selecting locations based on climate, logistics, security, altitude and proximity to match venues.

What Is a World Cup Base Camp?

A World Cup base camp is a team’s headquarters during the tournament. It includes:

  • Training facilities
  • Team accommodation
  • Recovery and medical centres
  • Gym and performance labs
  • Tactical analysis spaces

Teams normally stay at these camps throughout the group stage before deciding whether to remain there or relocate for knockout matches.

Cities Emerging as Tournament Hubs

Several locations are becoming major World Cup centres due to multiple teams choosing them as bases:

  • Kansas City — Argentina, England, Netherlands

  • California — Australia, Austria, Qatar, New Zealand, Switzerland
  • Florida — Portugal, Cape Verde, Curacao

These cities are expected to see heavy fan activity, media attention and tourism during the tournament.

Why Teams Carefully Choose Base Camps

National teams consider several factors before selecting a camp:

  • Travel distance to group-stage matches
  • Climate and altitude adaptation
  • Privacy and security
  • Training quality
  • Fan support and local communities
  • Luxury recovery facilities

For example, Mexico gains a significant altitude advantage by remaining in Mexico City, while South Korea selected Guadalajara partly for high-altitude acclimatisation.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first ever featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across three host nations.
