DUBAI-The United States has announced plans for what it describes as the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran, as Washington intensifies economic pressure on Tehran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures are aimed at weakening and ultimately collapsing the Iranian government. He also called on other countries, including China, to support the campaign.

China has rejected the US approach, warning that increased economic sanctions will not resolve the disputes with Iran. Beijing has criticised Washington’s latest push for what it describes as an “economic D-Day” against Tehran.

Iran has also condemned the proposed sanctions, calling them illegal and inhumane.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command says its forces have redirected 67 merchant ships, disabled three vessels and boarded two others travelling to or from Iranian ports as part of efforts to enforce a revived naval blockade.

The latest developments mark a further escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the impact of the sanctions and the naval measures expected to have wider implications for international trade and regional stability.
