WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — The United States said Friday it expects a response from Iran on a proposed peace deal aimed at ending the escalating regional conflict, as reports emerged of clashes between American and Iranian naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that Washington anticipates Tehran’s reply later on Friday amid growing international concern over rising instability in the Middle East.

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported “sporadic clashes” involving Iranian and US naval units in the strategic waterway, a vital global oil shipping route. No immediate casualties or damage were officially confirmed by either side.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of undermining diplomatic efforts, saying the United States repeatedly turns to military action whenever negotiations appear possible.

“Every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the US opts for a reckless military adventure,” Araghchi said, questioning whether the latest developments were part of a pressure campaign against Tehran.

Meanwhile, violence continued to intensify in Lebanon, where Israeli air strikes and bombardments reportedly killed dozens on Friday, marking one of the deadliest days since Israel launched its military offensive on March 2.

The US State Department announced that it will host mediation talks between Israel and Lebanon in Washington, DC on May 14 and 15 as part of efforts to ease regional tensions and prevent further escalation.
