Integrated road-safety measures, smart enforcement and AI-powered monitoring credited with major reduction
ABU DHABI — Traffic-related fatalities in the UAE declined by 74 per cent between 2011 and 2025, according to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Interior, highlighting the impact of the country’s comprehensive road-safety strategy.
The reduction has been attributed to a combination of stronger governance, advanced traffic legislation, smart enforcement systems, artificial intelligence-powered monitoring, infrastructure improvements and nationwide road-safety awareness campaigns.
The Ministry of Interior said it continues to strengthen field operations and public-awareness initiatives in cooperation with police authorities, government agencies and private-sector partners to further reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses caused by road accidents.
The UAE is also supporting the global target of reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries by half by 2030.
The Ministry’s efforts are being implemented under the guidance of Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, with road safety remaining a key national priority.
Brig. Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harthy, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council at the Ministry of Interior, said the UAE’s traffic management system has developed strong capabilities to respond proactively to different conditions and challenges.
He said close coordination between authorities and a unified approach have helped ensure efficient traffic management and rapid responses while maintaining high road-safety standards.
Al Harthy said the Federal Traffic Council has also established business-continuity plans with government authorities and strategic partners to ensure traffic services remain operational during different circumstances.
The council monitors a range of national traffic-safety indicators, including the “We the UAE 2031” target of placing the country among the world’s top three nations in terms of road fatalities.
It also oversees national indicators relating to traffic accidents and deaths and coordinates unified road-safety campaigns across the UAE.
Summer road-safety campaign
The Ministry recently concluded its third traffic-safety campaign of 2026, titled “Summer Without Accidents”, which focused on reducing crashes and injuries during the summer travel and holiday season.
The campaign targeted motorists and other road users, with particular emphasis on vehicle safety and preventive maintenance.
Motorists were urged to inspect tyres regularly, maintain their vehicles, comply with permitted roof-load limits and ensure that loads do not exceed 60 centimetres in height.
Drivers were also advised to check vehicle lights and indicators and avoid leaving flammable materials inside vehicles.
Enforcement and public awareness
The campaign combined field enforcement with public education, including increased police patrols on external roads and the use of smart systems to identify dangerous traffic violations.
Authorities also promoted safe-driving messages in Arabic, English and Urdu through social media platforms to reach different sections of the UAE’s diverse population.
The Ministry stressed that road safety remains a shared responsibility between authorities and road users.
Drivers were urged to observe speed limits, maintain safe distances, comply with traffic regulations and remain alert to risks such as leaving children unattended inside vehicles.
The UAE said its continued investment in smart traffic systems, infrastructure, enforcement and public awareness is aimed at building safer roads and further reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries nationwide.
