Abu Dhabi- As Eid Al Adha celebrations approach across the UAE, Abu Dhabi Police has urged motorists to avoid using mobile phones while driving to send or read Eid greeting messages, warning that even a few seconds of distraction can result in serious road accidents.
Authorities called on drivers to remain fully focused on the road and stay away from social media and messaging apps during the busy holiday period, when traffic is expected to increase as families travel for prayers, gatherings, and visits.
Police advised residents to send Eid wishes before starting their journeys or after parking safely, stressing that distracted driving reduces reaction time and can cause motorists to lose control during emergencies.
Officials highlighted that inattentiveness remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the UAE and encouraged all motorists to obey traffic regulations to help ensure a safe and peaceful Eid holiday.
Under UAE traffic laws, distracted driving carries a fine of Dh800 and four black points on a driver’s licence. Violations include using a mobile phone while driving, eating, applying makeup, or adjusting the radio.
Meanwhile, Dubai Police has introduced tougher penalties since October 2024, including vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days for offences such as using phones while driving, tailgating, and sudden swerving. These penalties are in addition to existing federal fines ranging between Dh400 and Dh1,000 and four black points.
Road safety statistics continue to raise concern. According to data analysed by RoadSafetyUAE using Ministry of Interior figures, nearly 60 per cent of major road accidents in the UAE last year were linked to four key violations. Distracted driving alone accounted for 16 per cent of serious crashes, while negligence and lack of attention contributed another 11 per cent.
Earlier reports also showed that the UAE recorded 384 road deaths in 2024, with distracted driving listed among the top five causes of fatal accidents.
