US president says ‘anything could happen’ as tensions with Iran escalate
US President Donald Trump says he is considering a major decision over Iran, amid escalating tensions in the region and a reported attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump told Axios that he was approaching a significant decision on whether to take further action against Iran, saying that “anything could happen” as he weighs his next move.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck a Togo-flagged tanker while the vessel was attempting what it described as an “illegal passage” through the Strait of Hormuz.
The reported incident adds to growing concerns over security in the strategic waterway, a major route for global energy shipments.
The developments come as international scrutiny over the conflict intensifies. A UN fact-finding mission said there were “reasonable grounds” to believe the United States was responsible for two attacks in Iran, including a strike on a school in Minab in February. The mission said the attacks may constitute war crimes.
Elsewhere in the region, fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels has also intensified, with reports saying at least five people, including three children, have been killed in recent attacks.
The latest developments underscore the widening regional tensions as governments continue to assess the risk of further escalation.
