DUBAI-The Donald Trump administration is reviewing a proposed Iranian peace plan aimed at halting ongoing hostilities and reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, while deferring negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg, signalling that Tehran is weighing a US request to resume broader diplomatic talks.

Meanwhile, dozens of countries have called for the immediate and unhindered reopening of the Strait, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres warning that escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran in the strategic corridor could spark a global food crisis.

Elsewhere in the region, hostilities persist along the Israel-Lebanon border, where Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters continue exchanging fire. The death toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon since the April 17 ceasefire has risen to at least 40, underscoring the fragility of the truce.
