WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States commemorated the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with grand celebrations that were overshadowed by intense political divisions, as President Donald Trump took centre stage during the historic event.

Originally intended as a national, bipartisan celebration of America’s founding, the anniversary instead reflected the country’s deep political polarisation, with Trump’s speeches and messaging dominating much of the day’s proceedings.

Severe thunderstorms and lightning over Washington, D.C., forced officials to evacuate the National Mall for nearly two hours before the president eventually addressed tens of thousands of supporters gathered for the event.

In a speech filled with patriotic language, Trump described the United States as the “crowning achievement” of human history, praising Americans for what he called their unmatched contributions to freedom, progress and justice.

“No people have done more good, shown more courage, made more progress, righted more injustice, or achieved more greatness than the American people,” Trump declared, adding that the nation was “prouder than ever before.”

The president also celebrated American military veterans, paying tribute to those who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. However, he used the occasion to renew his criticism of what he described as the growing threat of communism within the United States, warning that Americans must prevent such ideologies from taking hold.

Trump has increasingly focused on this message ahead of the country’s upcoming midterm elections, where control of Congress is expected to be fiercely contested. During his address, he also urged lawmakers to approve tougher voting laws, arguing they were necessary to protect the integrity of future elections.

The president further highlighted recent American military operations in Iran and Venezuela, claiming they demonstrated the strength of the United States on the global stage.

Following his speech, spectators were treated to an elaborate fireworks display that Trump said would be the largest ever staged as part of an Independence Day celebration.

Outside the official festivities, however, the country’s political divisions were evident. Near Capitol Hill, groups of masked demonstrators, including individuals carrying Confederate flags and others displaying symbols associated with white nationalist organisations, gathered while chanting nationalist slogans.

Public opinion also reflected the nation’s growing divisions. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that 61 percent of Americans believe the country is not fully living up to the ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence.

While the anniversary marked 250 years since the birth of the United States, it also served as a reminder of the political and social challenges confronting the nation as it heads toward another pivotal election season.
