United States President Donald Trump has said negotiations aimed at ending hostilities between Iran and Israel are in their “final throes,” raising hopes for a breakthrough after days of escalating military confrontation.

While both Iran and Israel have paused direct attacks against each other, Tehran warned that military action could resume if Israel continues what it described as “aggression,” particularly in neighbouring Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly cancelled a planned strike on Iran after Trump cautioned that Israel should “be careful, or you will be on your own very soon,” according to US and Israeli media reports.

Despite the apparent easing of tensions between Israel and Iran, Israeli military operations continued in southern Lebanon, with strikes reported in the Nabatieh and Tyre regions. The latest attacks added to an already heavy toll, with the number of people killed in Lebanon since the conflict escalated rising to 3,637.

Meanwhile, US Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has called for a fresh investigation into the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty. The vessel was struck off the Egyptian coast during the Arab-Israeli war, killing 34 American sailors and injuring 170 others in one of the most controversial incidents in US-Israeli relations.

The developments come as international efforts continue to prevent a wider regional conflict and secure a lasting ceasefire across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
