Pakistan says significant progress has been made in efforts to revive a previous memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister said the development followed talks with Iran’s president, as Islamabad seeks to help ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The discussions come amid new US sanctions against Iran announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Washington says the measures are aimed at cutting financial support to the Iranian government and targeting military officials, weapons procurement networks, petroleum traders and brokers, as well as cyber actors linked to attacks on critical infrastructure.
The sanctions have drawn a strong response from Tehran. Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said the country’s leadership would guide Iran through the economic difficulties caused by the measures.
Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, has also warned that Tehran could halt oil exports from the Gulf if the United States continues what he described as an economic war.
Rezaei further warned that countries supporting Washington’s sanctions could be considered to be committing an act of war.
Pakistan’s latest diplomatic efforts come as tensions between the US and Iran remain high, with the possibility of further economic and regional consequences if negotiations fail.
