NAIROBI — Kenya has recorded at least 19 deaths from Mpox, with confirmed cases rising to 1,298 since the outbreak was confirmed three months ago, the Ministry of Health has said.
Mombasa has recorded the highest number of cases at 452, followed by Nairobi with 320.
The ministry has identified seven counties as high-risk areas, citing their location along major transport corridors and proximity to border crossings. The affected areas include Busia, Makueni, Kiambu, Kilifi and Nakuru, with the outbreak now reported in more than 40 counties.
Health authorities warned that Mpox remains a threat despite ongoing containment efforts and called for increased public awareness, stronger disease surveillance and intensified screening at border crossings.
Kenya is also maintaining surveillance for other infectious diseases, including Ebola. Although no confirmed Ebola cases have been reported, the ministry said measures are in place to detect suspected cases and prevent the virus from entering the country.
The government said it will continue strengthening surveillance, vaccination, public awareness and coordination among health authorities as it works to contain Mpox and prepare for other emerging health threats.
