Indonesia has officially enacted a new law prohibiting children under the age of 16 from accessing social media and other digital platforms that could expose them to harmful content or online fraud. The regulation came into force on March 28, 2026.
Announcing the policy earlier this month in Jakarta, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that the law is expected to affect approximately 70 million children in the country, which has a population of around 280 million.
With this move, Indonesia becomes the first nation in Southeast Asia to implement such a restriction. The decision follows similar action by Australia, which last year introduced the world’s first nationwide social media ban for minors, reflecting growing global concerns among families about online safety and the influence of major technology platforms on young users.
