Dubai International Airport (DXB) is introducing advanced security screening technology that will make the airport experience quicker and more convenient, allowing passengers to keep laptops, liquids and other items inside their hand luggage during security checks.
The new-generation scanners are being gradually installed across the airport as part of Dubai Airports’ ongoing technology and infrastructure upgrade programme.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the new equipment will eliminate much of the inconvenience traditionally associated with airport security.

Passengers travelling through Dubai International Airport (DXB) can look forward to faster and more convenient security checks as the airport introduces advanced scanners that allow laptops, liquids and other items to remain inside hand luggage.
The new-generation screening technology is being gradually rolled out across DXB, replacing older security equipment and reducing the need for passengers to unpack their bags at checkpoints.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the investment is part of a wider effort to make the airport journey smoother and more efficient.
“We’re reinvesting in new technology security machines, so you don’t have to take liquids or laptops out of bags,” Griffiths said.
“The whole process is getting slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient.”
No need to unpack your bag
For many travellers, airport security has traditionally meant opening hand luggage and removing laptops, liquids and other electronic devices before placing them in separate trays.
However, the new scanners are designed to examine the contents of bags without requiring passengers to remove those items.
The technology was previously tested at DXB, with Dubai Airports reporting successful trials and faster, more reliable screening.
Griffiths said the programme is now moving forward as part of a gradual and continuous upgrade across the airport.
“Some of the machines are already in,” he said. “It’s just a gradual, ongoing programme of continuous upgrade.”
The long-term aim is to replace older technology so that all passengers can benefit from the same level of convenience.
Upgrades across DXB
The new security technology is being introduced alongside refurbishment work in several parts of Dubai International Airport.
Terminal 1 is undergoing upgrades, including new flooring and additional security lanes, while work is also taking place in Concourse B and other areas of the airport.
The improvements form part of DXB’s strategy to increase efficiency and handle growing passenger numbers without the need for major new infrastructure.
With millions of travellers passing through the airport every year, even small reductions in waiting times at security checkpoints can significantly improve the overall passenger experience.
The future: fewer queues and less hassle
Griffiths said the ultimate goal is to remove as much “friction” as possible from the airport journey.
The familiar routines of removing belts, shoes, laptops and liquids could increasingly become a thing of the past as new technology transforms security screening.
The wider changes are also expected to improve other parts of the airport experience, including passenger processing and immigration.
Griffiths envisions a future where travellers can enter the airport, move smoothly through security and immigration, and head towards their departure gate with minimal waiting.
Instead of spending long periods standing in queues or unpacking bags, passengers could have more time to relax, enjoy a coffee or grab something to eat before boarding.
Dubai Airports is gradually installing the new machines, meaning the experience may differ depending on the terminal or security lane being used.
However, as the technology becomes more widely available, passengers travelling through DXB can expect security checks to become faster, smoother and considerably less intrusive.
