DUBAI, – Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Ahmed died on Monday at the age of 76, according to the Dubai Media Office.

The Ruler’s Court announced that official mourning would begin Monday, with flags across Dubai to be flown at half-mast throughout the 10-day period.

Sheikh Ahmed was born on July 12, 1950, in Bur Dubai, the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who ruled Dubai before Sheikh Mohammed.

He held several senior public and sporting positions during his career, including Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, second deputy ruler of Dubai, chairman of Al Wasl Football Club and Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre.

In 1975, Sheikh Ahmed served as Commander of the Central Military Zone and participated in official military graduation ceremonies alongside the UAE’s founding leaders.

His association with Al Wasl was also prominent. In June 2007, he joined Sheikh Mohammed in celebrating the club’s 2006/07 UAE League championship, won during his tenure as chairman.

Sheikh Ahmed was also involved in philanthropic initiatives. In 2021, he supported efforts through Dubai Police and Public Security towards the establishment of the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital through the Al Jalila Foundation.

His death marks the passing of a senior member of Dubai’s ruling family who held prominent roles in public service, security, sport and philanthropy.

The 10-day mourning period will see flags flown at half-mast across Dubai as the emirate pays tribute to Sheikh Ahmed.
