Taking the Dubai Metro? Be careful where you sit—and stay alert. Sleeping or sitting in restricted areas could cost you a fine. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reminded passengers that obstructing movement or occupying non-passenger spaces is prohibited and can lead to penalties starting from Dh100.
Dubai Metro is one of the busiest transit systems in the region, carrying nearly 900,000 daily riders. To ensure smooth and safe journeys, the RTA has reiterated the importance of proper commuter etiquette—especially during peak hours.
Key guidelines for commuters include:
Respect personal space
Move down into the cabins
Allow others to exit before boarding
Avoid sitting in non-passenger areas
Keep doorways and intersections clear
These simple acts of courtesy help maintain efficient flow and a pleasant experience for everyone.
The reminder comes after a passenger suggested on social media that the RTA place “Do Not Sit Here” stickers or impose stricter fines for those sitting at compartment intersections—particularly on the Red Line, where blockages are common during rush hours. The RTA responded by thanking the commuter and confirming that inspectors regularly monitor trains and issue fines when necessary.
Passengers are encouraged to report violations directly to station staff for immediate action.
