Dubai Customs inspectors have foiled an attempt to smuggle 460 grams of 24-karat gold into the UAE after discovering the precious metal concealed inside the frame of a travel suitcase.
The sophisticated concealment attempt was uncovered after customs inspectors detected unusual indicators during electronic screening of the luggage.
According to Dubai Customs, the gold had been melted and reshaped into thin rods before being carefully hidden inside the suitcase frame in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
Following the suspicious findings on the screening system, inspectors conducted a detailed manual inspection of the luggage, leading to the discovery and seizure of the gold.
Dubai Customs said the successful interception demonstrates the high level of preparedness and expertise of its inspectors, as well as the authority’s continued efforts to strengthen inspection systems and protect the community and UAE borders.
The authority also issued a warning to travellers, urging them never to carry luggage belonging to another person unless they have verified exactly what is inside.
Travellers have similarly been advised against accepting bags from strangers at their departure points or exchanging luggage with friends without first checking the contents.
Authorities warned that passengers caught attempting to smuggle goods into the UAE could face fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the circumstances of the offence.
The latest seizure highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods used by smugglers — and the growing ability of Dubai Customs to detect concealed items through advanced screening technology and thorough manual inspections.
