The sun’s out, and so is the sweat.

If you’re anything like me, someone who once made the mistake of wearing a full-sleeved dress in the UAE summer, you might need some advice on what to wear (and what to avoid). These aren’t just fashion tips; it’s how to prepare your wardrobe to survive 45 degrees and above, with insights from dermatologists and a bit of science.

We spoke to Radha Patil, a dermatologist at Medcare Royal, Dubai, for expert advice, and did some research of our own too. As she says, “During the summer season, it’s important to choose clothing that helps regulate body temperature and keeps the skin comfortable. Lightweight and breathable fabrics such as linen and rayon are ideal choices. These materials allow for better air circulation, help wick moisture away from the skin, and reduce the risk of heat-related skin irritation. Loose-fitting clothes are also recommended, as they enhance ventilation and prevent chafing, especially in areas prone to sweating.”

Moreover, such fabrics also minimises the risk of heat rashes and fungal infections, which are common in hot and humid weather. In contrast, synthetic fabrics can trap sweat and heat, leading to discomfort and potential skin issues.

So, here’s what you should do, and shouldn’t do.

Watch your cotton dresses
Cotton gets a lot of praise and it deserves some of it. It’s breathable, soft, and natural. But in humid conditions, cotton tends to trap moisture. Once you sweat, it stays wet, and stays on you. You know the sticky, clawing feeling.

Go linen

Linen has firmly earned its spot in your summer wardrobe. Made from the flax plant, it features a looser weave than cotton, allowing better airflow and faster drying. This means you stay cooler and drier even in the heat.

Pro tip: Wrinkles are part of the charm. If someone points it out, tell them you’re heat-optimised.

Avoid polyester
Polyester may look great on the hanger, but in the heat, it becomes a nightmare. As a synthetic fabric made from plastic, it traps heat, blocks airflow, and repels moisture, so your sweat just sits on your skin. It’s not breathable or moisture-wicking, leaving you feeling sticky and prone to strong odours.

Quick tip: Beware of ‘poly-cotton’ blends if the polyester percentage is high. They trap heat more than they let it go.

Say hello to bamboo and modal
Bamboo viscose, modal, and Tencel (lyocell) are soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and sustainable fabrics that feel incredibly smooth—like butter on your skin. Backed by science, Tencel in particular has been shown to absorb significantly more moisture than cotton and dry faster, making it perfect for the UAE’s hot and humid climate. These fabrics help keep you cooler and drier as you move between outdoor brunches and air-conditioned cars, all while looking effortlessly stylish.

According to a 2017 study published in Fibers and Polymers, lyocell outperforms cotton in moisture management by absorbing more moisture and drying faster, enhancing comfort in warm climates.

Style tip: Look for bamboo or modal loungewear sets that double as errand outfits. You will feel like you’re still in your PJs, but better dressed.

Go light, loose

Lightweight fabric

Loose cuts

Light colours

Dark clothes absorb more UV rays and trap heat. White, beige, soft pastels and pale blues actually reflect light, which helps keep you cool. Loose silhouettes also let air circulate, giving you a mini breeze with every step.

Style idea: Think flowy kaftans, oversized shirts, wide-leg trousers, and shirt dresses.

Get the right coverage

It might seem counterintuitive, but long sleeves and maxi dresses made from the right fabrics can actually keep you cooler. They shield your skin from direct sun exposure, which reduces surface temperature and the risk of sunburn.

Desert dwellers around the world have been doing this for centuries — and they’re onto something. The key is the fabric, not the length.

Bonus: SPF clothing is a thing

If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, consider UPF-rated clothing (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). These garments are specially woven to block harmful UV rays and are often made with breathable, light fabrics.
