Apple’s latest flagship smartphone has arrived in the UAE, but the big question for existing iPhone 17 Pro Max owners is simple: is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth the extra money?
The iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale in UAE stores on September 18, 2026, starting at AED 5,499 for 256GB. That is AED 400 more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s launch price.
While the increase is relatively modest at the entry level, the price gap becomes much larger on higher-storage models.
So, what exactly are buyers getting for the extra money?
Design: Almost Identical
At first glance, there is little separating the two phones.
Both measure 163.4 x 78 x 8.8mm, feature Ceramic Shield 2 glass and carry an IP68 rating.
The biggest physical difference is weight.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max weighs 233 grams, while the 18 Pro Max comes in at 249 grams. The additional weight is largely linked to its larger battery.
Apple has also changed the colour options. The 17 Pro Max was available in Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue, while the 18 Pro Max comes in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.
For anyone expecting a dramatically redesigned iPhone, however, there is little here.
Display: Same Experience
Apple has kept the same display technology.
Both models feature a 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1320 x 2868 resolution and approximately 460 pixels per inch.
Peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, while HDR10 and Dolby Vision are supported on both models.
In other words, the display is not a reason to upgrade from the 17 Pro Max.
Performance: A20 Pro Takes the Lead
The biggest internal upgrade comes from Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses the A19 Pro, manufactured using a 3nm process, while the A20 Pro moves to a 2nm process.
The newer chip also increases high-performance CPU clock speeds from 4.26GHz to 4.93GHz and adds another GPU core, moving from six to seven.
For everyday users, the difference may not be immediately obvious.
Messaging, browsing, streaming and social media will feel familiar.
But people who regularly edit 4K video, play demanding games or use several intensive applications simultaneously should benefit from the additional processing power and efficiency.
Camera: Apple’s Biggest New Feature
The camera system is where Apple has introduced one of the most noticeable changes.
Both phones retain a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide and 48MP periscope telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom.
However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max introduces a variable aperture on its main camera.
The aperture can move between f/1.5 and f/4.0, allowing the phone to control how much light enters the lens and how much background blur appears in an image.
This is the first time Apple has introduced a mechanical variable aperture on an iPhone.
Users can allow the system to adjust automatically or take greater control through new Pro camera controls, including shutter speed, white balance and histogram options.
Apple is also opening the aperture controls to third-party camera applications, which could be particularly useful for photographers and content creators.
The 18 Pro Max also allows Cinematic mode effects to be applied to ordinary video footage, giving users greater flexibility when recording.
Beyond these changes, much of the camera hardware and professional video functionality remains similar between the two generations.
Battery: One of the More Meaningful Upgrades
Battery capacity has received a substantial increase.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 4,823mAh battery in its Nano SIM version, compared with 5,391mAh in the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That represents an increase of more than 500mAh.
Apple’s European battery endurance ratings also point to an improvement, with the 17 Pro Max rated at 53 hours compared with 62 hours for the 18 Pro Max.
The combination of a larger battery and the more efficient A20 Pro chip should translate into longer usage between charges.
Charging has also improved.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach 50 percent charge in about 15 minutes, compared with around 20 minutes for the previous model.
Wireless charging remains at 25W through MagSafe or Qi2.
Software
The iPhone 17 Pro Max launched with iOS 26 and can be upgraded to iOS 27.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with iOS 27 installed.
For existing 17 Pro Max owners, software alone is therefore unlikely to justify an upgrade, as both devices remain part of Apple’s current software ecosystem.
UAE Price: The Bigger Story
The difference in price becomes more significant as storage increases.

The base model costs AED 400 more.
But buyers choosing 1TB will pay AED 1,250 more for the newer phone, while the 2TB model carries a AED 2,100 premium.
That makes storage choice an important part of the upgrade equation.
Apple’s UAE Trade In programme can also reduce the cost, with eligible iPhones potentially receiving instant credit depending on the model and condition.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is not a complete redesign.
The display is essentially unchanged, the overall dimensions remain the same and the core camera hardware has not received a major overhaul.
But Apple has made three significant changes: the A20 Pro chip, a larger battery and a variable-aperture main camera.
For photographers, videographers, gamers and heavy smartphone users, those changes could make the 18 Pro Max a worthwhile upgrade.
For someone who already owns an iPhone 17 Pro Max and mainly uses it for calls, messaging, social media, streaming and everyday photography, the differences are much less dramatic.
The bigger question is therefore not whether the iPhone 18 Pro Max is newer.
It obviously is.
The question is whether the AED 400 minimum premium — and potentially more than AED 2,000 at the top storage level — buys improvements that you will actually notice in your daily use.
