WASHINGTON — August 14, 2026 — The United States says it is prepared to maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely as Washington pushes to strengthen its position in the ongoing conflict with Tehran.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said American forces have the capacity to sustain the blockade for as long as necessary, while Iran disputes US claims that maritime traffic is continuing normally through the Strait of Hormuz.

US Vice President JD Vance said Washington’s main objectives include keeping energy prices stable for American consumers, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and securing a stronger US strategic position.

Iran’s military, however, maintains that ships cannot pass through the Strait of Hormuz without Iranian authorisation, contradicting US statements about normal maritime traffic in the strategically important waterway.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington would impose unprecedented measures against Iran, saying the coming actions would be unlike previous sanctions.

The developments are raising fresh concerns over global energy supplies, with the Strait of Hormuz serving as a critical route for international oil and gas shipments.

The US position signals that Washington is prepared for a prolonged confrontation with Tehran, while tensions over the waterway could have wider consequences for global energy markets and international trade.
