Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has cast doubt over his future after his side’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting he needs time to reflect before deciding whether to continue in charge.
The emotional 48-year-old fought back tears as he addressed the media following the loss, which ended Argentina’s hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.
Scaloni said he plans to hold talks with the Argentine Football Association before making a final decision on his future when his contract expires in December.
“I will speak with the president. I have an idea of what I would like to do, but I need time to think,” Scaloni said. “We’ve given everything until the very last minute, and I feel it’s only fair to take some time for myself.”
Since taking over after Argentina’s disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign, Scaloni has transformed the national team into one of the world’s most successful sides. During his tenure, he guided La Albiceleste to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024, making him the most decorated coach in Argentina’s history.
Despite the disappointment in the final, Scaloni praised his players for their commitment and acknowledged Spain deserved to lift the trophy after dominating much of the match before Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time.
“They deserved the victory. That’s the reality, and we have to accept it,” he said. “We came very close, and I’m proud of what this group achieved.”
The coach admitted one of the biggest challenges would be rebuilding a squad capable of competing at the highest level once again. With several senior players approaching the end of their international careers, including 39-year-old captain Lionel Messi, Argentina is expected to undergo a significant transition before the 2030 World Cup.
“I never imagined we would achieve everything we have,” Scaloni said through tears. “To continue, you need to reset your mind. Creating another group like this is extremely difficult, and that’s what makes this moment so painful.”
Scaloni left the press conference to a standing ovation from journalists after delivering his emotional remarks.
Although uncertainty surrounds his future, Scaloni’s legacy is firmly established, having led Argentina to one World Cup title, two Copa América championships and consecutive appearances in World Cup finals.
