The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is nearing its conclusion, with the first batch of nations officially booking their places in the historic Round of 32.
For the first time in World Cup history, the tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, introducing a new knockout format. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed finishers, advance to the knockout phase.
The Round of 32 will be played from June 28 to July 3, before the competition progresses to the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, the third-place playoff, and the final on July 19.
New Tie-Breaker Rules
FIFA has introduced a significant change to the group-stage tie-breaker system. Instead of overall goal difference being the primary separator between teams level on points, head-to-head results now take priority.
If teams remain tied after head-to-head comparisons, overall goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record, and finally the FIFA World Rankings will determine the final standings.
For the eight best third-placed teams, qualification is based on points, goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record, and FIFA rankings.
