Buenos Aires, Argentina – The family of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is recovering from a health issue and responding positively to medical treatment.
The statement, released on Thursday through Messi’s media office, came amid growing speculation about Jorge Messi’s condition and false reports circulating in Argentina claiming he had passed away.
According to the family, Jorge Messi remains under medical supervision and is “evolving favourably.” No details were provided regarding the nature of his illness, while the family appealed for privacy and respect during this period.
The announcement follows an emotional moment during Argentina’s FIFA World Cup campaign when Lionel Messi was seen wiping away tears after scoring against Algeria on June 16. The goal was later ruled out, but the emotional reaction sparked widespread concern among fans.
Speaking after the match, Messi explained that his emotions were linked to personal circumstances rather than football.
“I’ve had some tough days. It wasn’t related to football. Those feelings were because of that,” Messi said. “I thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the delegation for helping me.”
Jorge Messi has been a central figure throughout his son’s legendary career. He accompanied the young Lionel to FC Barcelona in the early 2000s for a trial at the club’s renowned youth academy and later managed contract negotiations, sponsorships, image rights, and various business ventures.
The family also condemned irresponsible speculation surrounding Jorge’s health, urging the public and media to exercise caution and sensitivity.
“A person’s health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest,” the statement read.
Argentina, the defending world champions, remain focused on their FIFA World Cup title defence and are preparing for a crucial Group J encounter against Austria on Monday in Dallas.
The Messi family expressed gratitude for the messages of support received from fans around the world and requested continued respect for their privacy as Jorge Messi continues his recovery.
