Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with US President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday following a grand welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People.
Speaking during the summit, Xi said the common interests between China and the United States “outweigh” their differences, while Trump praised Xi’s leadership as “great” amid growing global tensions.
The meeting is expected to focus heavily on trade, technology restrictions, tariffs, and regional security. Trump is pushing for wider access for American companies in Chinese markets and increased Chinese purchases of US goods.
Xi, meanwhile, is expected to seek US concessions on Taiwan and tariff policies as Beijing looks to ease pressure on its economy.
The ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran is also likely to dominate discussions, with China remaining Tehran’s largest buyer of oil and gas.
The summit comes at a critical moment for global markets and geopolitical stability, as both powers attempt to manage rising competition while avoiding deeper confrontation.
