Emirates will prohibit the use of all power banks onboard its flights from 1 October 2025, following a safety review to address the rising risk of lithium battery incidents in the aviation industry.
Passengers may still carry one power bank under 100 watt-hours, provided it meets specific storage and safety requirements.
Under the new rules, power banks cannot be used to charge devices during the flight or be charged using the aircraft’s power supply. They must not be placed in checked luggage or overhead bins but stored in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front.
The airline said the changes aim to mitigate risks such as thermal runaway—a process where damaged or overcharged lithium batteries can overheat and potentially cause fires. Emirates stressed that safety remains a core value and that the regulations will enable cabin crew to respond swiftly in the rare event of an onboard battery-related incident.
