UAE: Fujairah Police step up action against jaywalking, issue reminder of Dh400 fine
The General Command of Fujairah Police has issued a firm warning to pedestrians against crossing roads from unauthorised areas, stressing that such actions endanger their lives and the safety of other road users.

The authority also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching pedestrian crossings, particularly zebra crossings, to ensure the safety of all.

As part of this public safety drive, police reminded residents that the Federal Traffic and Road Law prohibits pedestrians from crossing roads outside designated areas, with violators facing a fine of Dh400.

The warning comes as part of the force’s ongoing efforts to enforce traffic rules, reduce pedestrian accidents, and enhance road safety for all. The latest awareness campaign, launched under the theme “Pedestrians Have the Right to Cross Safely,” aims to educate both pedestrians and drivers on safe road behaviours.

The campaign, which runs for a month, is part of the Traffic and Patrols Department’s 2025 operational plan. Colonel Saleh Mohammed Abdullah Al Dhanhani, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Fujairah Police, said the campaign focuses on addressing repeated violations by pedestrians who put themselves at risk by crossing from non-designated areas.

“We are witnessing a disturbing trend where pedestrians ignore safe crossing points, stepping into traffic from unsafe locations. This puts their lives and those of others in grave danger,” said Col. Al Dhanhani.

“At the same time, drivers must approach crossings carefully, slow down, and give way to pedestrians.” Col. Al Dhanhani stressed that ensuring pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. The campaign also seeks to raise awareness among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people of determination, urging them to use footbridges, tunnels, and zebra crossings.

Fujairah Police said the initiative supports the Ministry of Interior’s strategic vision to make UAE roads safer and reduce traffic fatalities and injuries caused by negligence or unsafe behaviours. The police reiterated the need for cooperation between motorists and pedestrians, adding that enforcement of traffic laws, including fines for violations, is essential to deter reckless behavior and protect lives.
