Cairo: Kuwait’s Appeals Court has confirmed a preliminary ruling ordering an expatriate resident to pay KD30,000 ($97,135) in compensation for a house worker after he was convicted of abusing her.
The man was charged with detaining and torturing the maid inside his residence in the Mubarak Al Kabeer governorate.
A lawyer for the victim had accused the defendant of depriving the woman of her freedom and burning her body. The defendant has already been handed down a sentence of three years and four months in prison on charges of detention and assault.
In upholding the compensation ruling, the court has described the sum of money as legal blood money for the victim due to the material and moral damages inflicted on her.
The woman has suffered disability of 25% of her total body capacity as a result of the employer’s abuses.
The plaintiff had stated in her lawsuit that she had obtained a final ruling to imprison the defendant for three years and four months with hard labour and deportation from the country after serving the term.
She explained that that after starting to work in the defendant’s house, specifically during the year 2021, he began to beat her with his hands and using wooden and aluminum sticks on the pretext that she was working slowly.
The woman also accused him of restricting her freedom by closing the door of her room, and depriving her of food until she was taken to the hospital where she reported that she was detained and tortured. She was found to have suffered several injuries, including broken elbows.
