Dubai, UAE – Leading education providers across the United Arab Emirates have intensified efforts to recruit teachers for the 2026/27 academic year as student enrolment continues to rise and demand for quality education grows.

Major school operators, including Taaleem and GEMS Education, say they began recruitment months before the end of the current academic year in a bid to secure highly qualified educators ahead of increasing global competition.

According to Taaleem Director of Education Nicki Williams, most teaching positions for the upcoming school year have already been filled, with additional recruitment now largely driven by growing enrolment numbers and strong demand for places in schools across the country.

Williams said particular attention is being given to Mathematics and Science teachers, subjects that continue to face global shortages. She noted that schools are conducting extensive international searches to identify and attract qualified candidates before peak recruitment periods.

Education providers are recruiting both internationally and locally, seeking to balance global expertise with educators who already possess experience within the UAE education system.

Schools are increasingly looking beyond academic qualifications, placing emphasis on teachers who can develop critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills and independent learning among students. Strong classroom management, effective communication skills, technological competence and cultural awareness have also emerged as key requirements.

Williams said international schools particularly value educators who can adapt to multicultural environments and contribute positively to diverse school communities.

Meanwhile, GEMS Education Group Chief Executive Officer Dino Varkey said teachers already working in the UAE bring valuable knowledge of the country’s educational landscape, regulatory requirements and diverse student populations.

However, Varkey stressed that recruitment decisions are based primarily on teaching quality and the ability to deliver outstanding learning experiences rather than geographical location.

As competition for talent intensifies, education providers are also focusing on teacher retention. School operators report that professional development opportunities, leadership pathways, career progression and workplace culture are becoming increasingly important factors for educators when choosing employers.

Varkey said many teachers are now prioritising career growth, purpose-driven work and opportunities to make meaningful contributions in the classroom, rather than focusing solely on salary packages.

The recruitment drive comes as the UAE’s education sector continues to expand, fuelled by population growth and increasing demand for high-quality private education. Industry leaders say competition for qualified teachers is expected to remain strong as schools prepare for the start of the new academic year.

Education analysts note that securing and retaining skilled teachers will remain critical to maintaining educational standards and supporting the continued growth of the UAE’s rapidly expanding school sector.
