UAE mediation in major breakthrough in the Russia-Ukraine War
In a major breakthrough in the Russia-Ukraine war, UAE mediation played a major role as the two countries exchanged more than 200 prisoners of war. In a statement the Ministry of Foreign affairs announced the success of the UAE’s mediation regarding the exchange of captives between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine.
The Ministry emphasized that the success of the mediation efforts was a reflection of the strong friendly relations between the UAE and both the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine, which were supported by sustained calls at the highest levels, and which resulted in one of the largest exchanges of captives between the two sides since the beginning of the war.
The two nations on Wednesday announced their first exchange of prisoners of war for nearly five months, after what Moscow said was a complex negotiation involving mediation by the UAE. Russia’s defence ministry said 248 military personnel had been handed over by Ukraine. Kyiv said it had brought home 230 people — 224 soldiers and six civilians — in what it said had been the largest documented swap of troops so far.
Ukraine’s POW coordination center also acknowledged the UAE’s role in the exchange, without giving details.
Despite the lack of any dialogue on how to end the 22-month war, Kyiv and Moscow have held many prisoner swaps since the early months of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
