Jayden Adams, the South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, has died at the age of 25, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie confirmed on Saturday.

Adams, who represented South Africa at the recent FIFA World Cup, was regarded as one of the country’s brightest football talents. His death has sent shockwaves through South African football, with tributes pouring in from government officials, teammates and supporters.

In a statement posted on X, McKenzie said he had learnt of Adams’ passing “with profound shock and a heavy heart” and described the midfielder as a player whose talent and humility had inspired many.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters,”

McKenzie said.

The minister said the cause of death had not yet been confirmed and urged the public and media to avoid speculation while the family and club grieve.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time,”

he said.

McKenzie also revealed that Adams played in South Africa’s opening Group A match against the Czech Republic only hours after learning of the death of his grandmother. The midfielder started the match before being substituted at halftime.

Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last year. During his first season with the Pretoria-based club, he helped Sundowns win the CAF Champions League, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s rising stars.

Known for his composure in midfield, energy and technical ability, Adams had become an important figure for both club and country and was expected to play a major role in the future of South African football.

McKenzie said the nation would remember Adams for the pride with which he represented South Africa.

“Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa. Rest in eternal peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten,”

he said.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
