The global electric vehicle (EV) fleet grew by nearly one-third in 2024 to reach 55.8 million units, with China alone accounting for over half of that total, according to new data from Germany’s Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW).

China’s EV fleet now stands at 31.4 million, solidifying its position as the world’s dominant electric car market. The United States trails far behind in second place with 6.4 million vehicles, followed by Germany with 2.6 million.

The report includes fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and EVs with range extenders. Other leading nations include the United Kingdom and France, each with around 2.1 million vehicles, while Norway, despite its smaller size, boasts just over 1 million.

While the overall numbers are up, the pace of growth has slowed. In 2024, the global EV fleet expanded by 13.8 million vehicles, down slightly from the 14.2 million added in 2023.

ZSW’s findings reflect a continued but moderating global shift toward electric mobility, as adoption rates begin to level out after years of rapid growth.
