Four-time world champions Germany head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to erase the memories of back-to-back group-stage exits and re-establish themselves among football’s elite.

After disappointing campaigns in 2018 and 2022, Germany arrive in North America with renewed confidence under coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has transformed the team’s fortunes since taking charge in September 2023.

The Germans qualified comfortably for the tournament, winning five of their six qualifying matches, and now boast an exciting blend of youth and experience. Rising stars Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Lennart Karl provide creativity and flair, while veterans Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rudiger and the returning Manuel Neuer offer leadership and stability.

Young Stars Carry German Hopes

At the centre of Germany’s ambitions are two of Europe’s brightest talents – Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

Musiala remains one of the most gifted attacking midfielders in world football. Although injuries have disrupted his preparations, Germany will be hoping the Bayern Munich star reaches peak fitness before the tournament begins.

Wirtz, meanwhile, has rediscovered his form after a challenging start to life at Liverpool. His vision, versatility and ability to unlock stubborn defences make him one of Germany’s most important players.

Another exciting name to watch is 18-year-old Bayern Munich sensation Lennart Karl. The teenager enjoyed a breakthrough season, becoming one of the youngest scorers in both the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League. His dribbling ability and close control have already earned comparisons with some of football’s greatest talents.

Neuer Returns for One Last Mission

One of the biggest surprises in Germany’s World Cup squad is the return of legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The 40-year-old retired from international football after Euro 2024 but has been persuaded to return for a fifth World Cup appearance. Nagelsmann believes Neuer’s experience, leadership and commanding presence could prove invaluable during the tournament.

Despite Neuer’s return, Joshua Kimmich will continue to captain the national team.

Questions Remain Up Front

While Germany possess quality throughout the squad, concerns remain regarding the striker position.

Kai Havertz is expected to lead the attack despite being more comfortable in a deeper role. Nick Woltemade, Deniz Undav and Maximilian Beier provide alternatives, but Germany lack a proven world-class goalscorer capable of deciding matches consistently.

Nagelsmann, however, remains confident.

“We want to become world champions,” the German coach has repeatedly stated.

Favourable Group Draw

Germany have been handed a relatively favourable Group E assignment and will be expected to advance to the knockout stages.

Their campaign begins against Curacao on June 14 before facing Ivory Coast on June 20. Germany conclude the group phase against Ecuador on June 25.

While Ivory Coast and Ecuador are capable opponents, Germany will be favourites to top the group and secure a place in the round of 32.
