A motorist has died after being struck by a passing vehicle on Sheikh Zayed Road after stopping on the road shoulder following a collision, Dubai Police confirmed on Monday.
The fatal incident occurred before Al Yalayis Bridge on the highway heading towards Abu Dhabi.
According to Juma bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, the accident initially involved two vehicles that stopped on the left road shoulder next to the fast lane. Authorities noted that stopping in this area is prohibited except in emergency situations because of the significant danger posed by high-speed traffic.
One of the drivers exited his vehicle to inspect the damage caused by the earlier collision. While he was standing on the roadway, another vehicle approaching from behind struck him. Due to the speed of the vehicle and the short distance available to react, the driver was unable to avoid the man, who died at the scene.
Following the tragedy, Dubai Police urged motorists not to stop unnecessarily on highway shoulders and advised drivers involved in minor accidents to move their vehicles to the nearest safe parking area away from traffic.
Authorities emphasised that stopping on road shoulders without a valid emergency is a serious traffic violation that can lead to fatal accidents and disrupt traffic flow. Officials also noted that excessive speed and failure to maintain a safe following distance contributed to the severity of the crash.
Drivers were reminded to observe speed limits, remain alert to road conditions, and anticipate unexpected hazards when travelling on major highways. Police added that road shoulders are strictly reserved for genuine emergencies such as sudden vehicle breakdowns or medical situations.
The force reiterated that strict penalties will continue to be enforced against traffic violations that endanger lives and property.
