Tensions between United States and Iran are rising sharply after the US Navy seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has condemned the move as an act of piracy and signaled that a response is imminent, casting serious doubt over the future of a fragile ceasefire set to expire on April 22.

Iranian state media reports that Tehran has yet to decide whether it will participate in the next round of diplomatic talks, despite claims by Donald Trump that US negotiators are preparing to travel to Pakistan in an effort to extend the truce.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with Iran’s ambassador in Islamabad, emphasizing the need for a sustainable, negotiated resolution to ease regional tensions. The discussions follow a recent visit by Pakistan’s military leadership to Tehran aimed at advancing peace efforts.

Global powers are also weighing in. Xi Jinping has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and urged an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire during talks with Mohammed bin Salman, who reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to dialogue and de-escalation.

As uncertainty deepens, countries are taking precautionary measures. India has evacuated more than 1.13 million people from the region through ongoing flight operations, while maintaining limited air travel from areas where airspace remains open. Airlines across the Gulf continue to operate under tight safety protocols as the situation evolves.

With the ceasefire deadline approaching, the risk of renewed confrontation looms, leaving the region and the wider international community on edge.
