The change of weather, the influx of tourists for holidays usually come with a new ‘worry’ for the residents of Dubai as they also welcome ‘uninvited guests’ in the form of bed bugs in their homes. A snap survey by the Daily Times revealed that most residents in Dubai have started to battle the presence of these tiny, biting pests that turn sleeping into torture sessions than resting time.
According to the Gulf News, most European countries have over the past weeks hit by these bed bugs, sparking fears of a global spread and with the impending holidays coming, worries are that they might spread like veld fire if not contained timeously. Signs of bed bug presence include bites, blood stains on the fabric of beds or sofas and bug excrement which consist of dark spots that can be seen hiding in places such as cracks in the wooden structures of beds, sofas and chairs.
These small insects can be spread by transferring from person to person on clothes, inside suitcases or any items they come into contact with thus raising fears that the influx of tourists may further spread them if not properly contained.
A technical Manager at Rentokil pest control company, Boits Laborte once said bed bugs lay five to eight eggs a day if they get a blood meal only once a week, emphasizing the need to quickly control them.
“Unless controlled, they will multiply fast because of the temperature and because most people don’t want to go out, so they will be inside the room. They are providing them with the right temperature and food. “If they get a blood meal once in a week, they lay five to eight eggs a day,” he said.
Signs of a Bedbug Infestation
Dark bloodstains on your mattresses and pillowcases, unpleasant and musty odor, shed of bed bugs skin and red spots on your body while you wake up in the morning are some of the signs of bedbug infestation.
Treatment and Precaution
To prevent the spread of bedbugs it is advisable that visitors and travelers take precautions like leaving their shoes outside, changing clothes outside and many more to make sure thy do not bring these pests inside. Authorities may as well consider spraying of all tourists at the port of entry so as to make sure that these pests are not imported from outside.
It is also wise to close all the dark gaps or cracks in the wall and as a final step maintain hygiene in and around your place. If your place is already infested with these bed bugs, clean your bed, clothing, and curtains in hot water and dry them at a high dryer temperature. Remove bed bugs along with their eggs from the mattress and vacuum the bed and surroundings. Residents may also acquire the services of Pest Control as quickly as possible if all home remedies do not yield results.
Rentokil pest control company, provides two methods of controlling the pests through spraying the insecticide or use of heat treatment. The heat treatment involves heating the whole room to between 50°C and 60°C for one to two hours and holding to that that temperature, everything dies.
