While the world focus has shifted to the on-going genocide in Gaza, behind the camera, the Russia-Ukraine war is quietly in motion with no signs of cease fire in sight. Daily Times take a brief account of some of the key developments in the war which today is on day 666.
The War
Shelling by Russian forces in Ukraine cities continue with latest reports claiming that nine people, including four children were severely injured on Thursday in the Southern city of Kherson. On the other hand, Ukraine’s Air Force said air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 18 out of 19 Russian drones fired at Khakhiv. The Ukrainian military spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun on Thursday acknowledged that Russian forces were gaining ground around the industrial city of Avdiivka, saying the Russians had “advanced by one and a half to two kilometers [0.3 to 1.2 miles] in some places” since October 10, but it had “cost them a lot”.
Casualties.
Since the start of the war on 24 February 2022, 27 449 civilian casualties were recorded with 9 701 killed, 17 748 injured in Ukraine, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). On the military side, the latest unconfirmed reports from CNN claim that Russia has to date lost around 315 000 troops and close to 2 200 battle tanks. A US official, said as of November the casualties on the Ukrainian side were approximately half a million though these are unconfirmed numbers coming from open sources.
Ceasefire Talks
Prospects of a ceasefire remain a dream in the pipe as both parties refuse to compromise on their demands. Commenting on Kyiv’s proposed peace plan, Kremlin said there was no basis for the talks as they excluded Russia. “We really consider that the topic of negotiations is not relevant right now,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday. If truly Kremlin and Kyiv, Israel and Palestine want peace, the negotiation table is the only place, as Desmond Tutu once said, “If you want peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies’.
