Football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 20-year journey with the Argentina national team.

The 39-year-old superstar confirmed the emotional decision on social media on Monday, just over a month after Argentina suffered defeat against Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Messi, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, described the decision to leave the national team as one that had caused him deep pain.

“I want to inform everyone that I am retiring from the National Team,” Messi said.

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts in my soul, but I understand that this is the moment.”

The Argentine captain thanked his family, coaches, teammates and millions of supporters who stood with him throughout his remarkable international career.

Messi led Argentina to historic glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, ending the country’s 36-year wait for football’s biggest trophy. He also helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021, finally ending years of international heartbreak.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continued to defy age by guiding Argentina all the way to the 2026 World Cup final, although their campaign ended in tears following defeat to Spain.

In his emotional farewell message, Messi said he was leaving the national team with pride.

“I am leaving with the peace and pride of having given them, together with my teammates, dream moments.”

The football icon also expressed his deep love for his country.

“Thank you God for making me Argentine. Go Argentina!”
