New corridor will run parallel to Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, with completion expected by the end of 2028
Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded two contracts worth Dh1.161 billion for the development of Al Meydan Street, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and expanding north-south road capacity across the emirate.
The project will establish Al Meydan Street as a strategic alternative corridor running parallel to Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, increasing north-south traffic capacity by 18 percent and improving the distribution of vehicles across Dubai’s road network.
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, the project includes 17 kilometres of new and upgraded roads and 3.7 kilometres of bridges. It will serve residential communities and development areas with a combined population exceeding 500,000 people.
The RTA said the project is expected to significantly reduce travel times between key areas. A journey between Al Manama Street and Dubai-Al Ain Road and Umm Suqeim Street is projected to fall from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes.
RTA Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors Mattar Al Tayer said the development would strengthen Dubai’s strategic road network and support continued urban and economic growth.
The construction programme has been divided into two contracts to accelerate implementation.
The first contract covers approximately 14 kilometres of Al Meydan Street between Latifa bint Hamdan Street and Umm Suqeim Street, as well as Al Marabea’ Street between Dubai Hills and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
It includes a grade-separated interchange at the intersection of Al Marabea’ Street and Al Meydan Street. The interchange will feature 1.6 kilometres of bridges, with four lanes in each direction and a capacity of up to 14,400 vehicles per hour.
The contract also includes a direct three-lane connection between Al Marabea’ Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, as well as a 700-metre elevated connection on Dubai-Al Ain Road to improve access to Nad Al Sheba.
The second contract covers the section of Al Meydan Street running from First Al Khail Street, across Al Khail Road, to Muscat Street. It also includes about two kilometres of new surface roads linking Al Meydan Street with Latifa bint Hamdan Street.
As part of the works, the intersection between Al Meydan Street and Muscat Street will be transformed into a multi-level interchange designed to allow free-flowing traffic in all directions. The interchange will include 1.4 kilometres of bridges and four lanes in each direction, with a capacity of up to 14,400 vehicles per hour.
The development will also include cycling tracks and underpasses beneath Al Meydan Street to provide safer and uninterrupted connections to Dubai’s existing cycling network.
The Al Meydan Street project will be integrated with the Latifa bint Hamdan Street Development Project, which is also scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
Together, the projects will improve connections between major highways, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
Communities expected to benefit include Dubai Hills, Nad Al Sheba, Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Dubai District One and Al Barari.
The wider Latifa bint Hamdan Street project will cover 12 kilometres and include seven bridges and eight tunnels. It is expected to accommodate more than 130,000 trips daily once completed.
The RTA said the combined projects form part of Dubai’s wider efforts to expand transport infrastructure, improve mobility and provide alternative routes as the emirate’s population and development continue to grow.
